Born on 18 July 1996 in Mumbai, into a Marwari Hindu family, Smriti grew up in Sangli, Maharashtra.

By age 9, she was in Maharashtra’s under-15 team; by 11, she made the under-19 side.

She also received the Arjuna Award in 2019.

She also became the first woman to score 1,000 ODI runs in a calendar year, breaking a long-standing record.

In 2025, Smriti was named the leading women’s cricketer in the world by Wisden Cricketers' Almanack.
